Instagram Launches Layout
Instagram has announced a new app called Layout. It’s a pretty simple concept, essentially an app that allows you to create a collage of photos in one picture. It’s a bit surprising that with all of the perfectly wonderful options available to collage enthusiasts that Instagram would release this now. Instagram is late to the party.
Like some of the favorite collage apps, like DipTic, Layout is available for free. It is also easy to use and works seamlessly with Instagram. And, you do not need to have an Instagram account to use it.
On the other hand, what makes Instagram so popular is filters, and Layout, while great at allowing you to craft collages, does not allow you to add filters to individual photos within the collage. That would have really set the Layout app apart. You’ll have to save it to Instagram to do that, and then that, of course, requires you to have an Instagram account, as well as adding a filter to the entire collage picture. With such a late-in-the-game release, you’d think Layout would be available for both iOS and Android, but Android users will have to wait a bit longer.
For special events promotional photos, collages can work well to feature several moments all in one picture. Since there is no real wow factor on this new app, I would recommend continuing to use whatever you are already comfortable with. Certainly take a moment to download and play with Layout, but don’t plan on changing a system which already works for you.
