September 2017 National “Holidays”
Happy September! There are many new opportunities this month to take advantage of fun, national “holidays” which people love to celebrate online.
September kicked off with a true holiday weekend, celebrating Labor Day and National Wildlife Day (also on the 4th). Beer is celebrated twice this month, so plan ahead! While there are too many of these festive holidays to list here, I’ll share the ones which are best suited for private clubs. In the least, take a photo or video and share a post on social media. You’ll see that the hashtag for each holidays trends on Twitter. I’ve included some ideas for casual events and activities inside your club. Most of these are National XYZ Day, but I’ve just listed them without using “National” on every date.
4th – Labor Day
4th – National Wildlife Day
5th – Cheese Pizza Day – That’s today! How about pizza slices int he bar tonight?
6th – Read a Book Day
7th – Beer Lover’s Day – The first of the beer events in September. Specials at Happy Hour are always a good idea. Or try a pop-up tasting, with a mini-class for distinguishing the different brews.
8th – Stand Up to Cancer Day
10th – Grandparent’s Day
11th – 9/11 Remembrance Day, Patriot Day – This year 9/11 falls on a Monday. A moment of silence is always appropriate. Whatever you do, DO NOT offer anything for the price of $9.11. Clubs have done that in the past and it is entirely inappropriate and disrespectful.
12th – Chocolate Milkshake Day – Give parents a reason to bring the kids by for dinner. Milkshakes!
13th – Positive Thinking Day
16th – Guacamole Day – Try a guacamole competition in your lounge. Select 3-5 members and provide them all access to the same ingredients. Have chef serve as the judge and give the winner an F&B credit or a small prize. Fun!
17th – Wife Appreciation Day – Prepare your husbands in the club well before today so that they can make this day special. Create a dinner package to celebrate. If your club has a spa – start talking to the husbands!
18th – Cheeseburger Day – One of my favorites. It’s still warm enough outside to BBQ and do a build-your-own-burger bar!
19th – International Talk Like A Pirate Day – I keep waiting for a club to take advantage of this wacky day! In your casual dining areas, can the service staff talk like a pirate? Can your members order in a pirate voice to earn a free glass of wine or beer with their meal? Can you offer a BOGO that can only be redeemed when a members talks like a pirate? Have some fun with this!
20th – Pepperoni Pizza Day
20th – Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown
21st- International Miniature Golf Day – Set up a mini-course for members to enjoy!
21st – World Gratitude Day
22nd – Elephant Appreciation Day
22nd – Ice Cream Cone Day – This falls on a Friday so make it a family night and offer an ice cream cone bar in the dining room.
22nd – Autumn begins – release new menus for food and beverage.
23rd – White Chocolate Day
28th – Drink Beer Day – The second beer lovers day! Throw a party in the lounge, offer a beer tasting, or even a blind tasting and see how well members know their beer!
28th – Strawberry Cream Pie Day – Dessert of the day!
29th – Yom Kippur begins at sundown
29th – Coffee Day – This is also a day ripe for a tasting. Work with your vendors to teach members the difference in coffee varieties. Good excuse for a breakfast event!
30th – Public Lands Day
YOu can always find more Food & Wine “holidays at the Foodimentary website. That links takes you to September.
What is fun about this content, and why I often encourage you to share these fun national holidays is the fact that your members are going to see these celebrated online anyway with trending hashtags and information from other outlets. Why not participate and bring these celebrations to life inside your club with casual activities and events your members will enjoy?
